Good Friday 2021: 1B – The Fall

1B - The Fall

Scripture
And the LORD God said, “The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.” So the LORD God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken. After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life. (Genesis 3:22-24)

Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned — To be sure, sin was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not charged against anyone’s account where there is no law. Nevertheless, death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin by breaking a command, as did Adam, who is a pattern of the one to come. (Romans 5:12-14)

Meditation
Try to imagine when the world was new…. what it may have been like when human relationships were perfect… when our relationship with God was perfect. Then, allow yourself to experience the indescribable grief of losing this this relationship… the profound sadness of the brokenness that was allowed in. Take a moment to feel the mourning, the lament, which rises from deep within you.

Then, pause to wonder with God about how this brokenness is present in the world… in your life situations, and in your own heart.
